This week's Krill Reward script threw up an interesting candidate: @taibahub, who says they make their own furniture.

Now, it looks to me as though they're using Hive to showcase their creations and drum up a bit of business. And do you know what? I rather like that. I'm a Conservative. I believe in private enterprise, people making things, selling their skills, and trying to earn a living for themselves. There's nothing wrong with using the blockchain to advertise what you do. It's a public platform, after all. Of course, this is Hive, where the overwhelming number of goddam Socialists seem to think that making a few quid out of your own efforts is somehow a character flaw! It also looks like the #DIYHub community has muted him. I don't know the full story, so I'm not going to pretend I do.
Could the user be crooked? Possibly. Remember, I don't know the person, and I'm not handing out certificates of good character. But the account isn't on the Hivewatchers blacklist, there are no recent downvotes, and my checks haven't thrown up any obvious red flags.
So, why only 50 Ecency Points instead of my usual 250?
Frankly, I'm covering my own backside!
The account is only 15 days old, and I have no previous history to go on. But that doesn't make the account any less deserving of support. If anything, it's exactly the kind of account Krill Reward was set up to find. New people, people who might otherwise go unnoticed, and people who could do with a bit of encouragement. I get the feeling that he might not fully understand how Hive works. I could be wrong, of course, but I don't know them well enough to make any grand claims about their intentions. My checks haven't revealed any obvious red flags, but that isn't a guarantee of anything. So I compromised. I awarded 50 points instead of 250, not because I think the account deserves that, but because I wanted to be a little cautious until I know more.
There's a difference between deciding somebody isn't worthy of support and admitting you don't yet know enough about them.
But why reward them at all?
Because I want to encourage people who are using Hive to do something productive, including promoting their own businesses.
Private enterprise shouldn't suddenly become a dirty word just because it's happening on a blockchain!
If someone makes furniture and uses Hive to showcase their work, I see nothing inherently wrong with that. They're trying to make something and potentially earn a living from their efforts. As a believer in private enterprise, I'd rather give them the benefit of the doubt rather than turn my nose up at them.
If you don't like somebody advertising their wares, you're perfectly entitled not to vote for them. People have choices. And if your objection is the financial rewards, you can vote 0%, you know! Although on the flip side, the author should probably decline rewards. 🤷🏻♂️
I'd also argue that if you're using a community specifically for DIY content, you ought to expect people to show off things they've made. But perhaps I'm missing something. It wouldn't be the first time! 🤷🏻♂️
I'm not claiming @ taibahub is a saint, nor am I saying the #DIYHub community is necessarily wrong. I simply don't know enough to make that judgement. 🤔
What I do know is that I saw enough reason to offer some support rather than write the account off. That's what Krill Reward is about: using predefined criteria to find candidates, checking what I reasonably can, and making a decision. It doesn't mean I have to agree with everybody, nor does it mean I have to follow the crowd. Sometimes I'll play it safe with the amount. But I'm certainly not going to reject somebody simply because they're trying to make a living from their own efforts.
