Charlie (Our Dog) was doing his nut first thing when I let him out for his morning wee. Because I'd let him out the patio door I thought it was a squirrel or some foolish cat that imagined it would be a good idea to enter Charlie's territory. Normally we let him out through the kitchen back door but it's been warm in the UK just lately so opening the patio door means Charlie can please himself but that also meant I couldn't see what Charlie was barking at. An hour or so later I went to put some rubbish in our bin outside the back door and was presented with a huge pigeon balanced precariously on the fence. I could tell by its ruffled feathers and refusal to fly off that something had clearly had a go at it. A further two or more hours later the wife came home from her night shift and she too saw the bird moving ever so slightly and yet gripping rigidly to the thin fence. I explained that it had been there for a while and that I thought a cat or something had attacked it to which my wife replied: "Best not tell your future son-in-law!"

The other pigeon

A few months back my daughter's partner saw a pigeon in their garden that also looked like something had been beating it up. My daughter, ever the pragmatist, said that there was little they could do given the COVID lockdown and that hopefully it would perk up and fly away. Her partner, Adam, went to his home-office and tried to work but the pigeon played on his mind, he kept getting up and looking out the window to see if it was still there and also what condition it was in but after a few hours, he couldn't take it anymore and started making phone calls to local rescue centres and the RSPCA obviously these organisations were concerned about the animal but with the country in lockdown getting someone to come out to a common bird was proving difficult.

Finally, a local rescue centre agreed to send someone and after a short wait the guy turned up with his specialist equipment to catch the patient that was now, at least, hobbling around. As the rescuer approached the pigeon was having none of it and jumped up on the fence panel, however, not wanting to have had a wasted journey the rescuer persevered in his attempts to net his quarry at which point the so-called Savaged Avian promptly flew off without even the slightest care in the world at the time and effort invested at its expense!

"I'm not going there!"

Laughing I said the wife: "I'm sure it'll be fine. I'm not going there, I'm not ringing anyone and if it's not OK, then let's just hope it keels over into the neighbours garden otherwise you know what Charlie's like, he'll probably bring it in as a present or plaything."

The pigeon is still there, still shocked but still alive.
