For the past seven years, the tiny town of Edmonds, Washington (just north of Seattle) has hosted a Scarecrow Festival. The event is organized by the Edmonds Historical Society and Museum. During the month long festival, both residents and businesses are encouraged to submit “family friendly”, hand made scarecrows into a design competition. Prizes are awarded after a public vote for the best submissions.

For my #wednesdaywalk I visited several of this year’s entries.

Scarecrows may be entered into one of seven categories. These include:

Residential
Retail Business
Service Business
Food/Beverage Business
Financial/Insurance/Real Estate
Arts/Government/School/Civic
Non-voting (for people who want to create but not compete).
Special awards are given out to the best first time entry and most historic entry.

Along with your standard Halloween fair, many cultural phenomena are also represented in scarecrow form. I saw a couple of spidermen (and a SPIDER HAM), at least three Stranger Things vignettes and the minions from Despicable Me.

There are at least 50 different scarecrows around town. However, the first one I spotted this year is my favorite. There is a fountain near the waterfront filled with skeletons. It is super creepy!
