Hello, friends especially foodies!
On Pasar Baru area where we had our legendary noodle, and also legendary snacks, there were also more and more street snacks sold. One of Indonesian Traditional also sold there, not far from the only one book store there. If you already visited my country maybe you already tried this snack.
It was fried.
It had sweet brown sauce.
It made from tofu.
I am sure the name would be quite popular for you, it was tahu gejrot (gejrot tofu)
The origin of Tahu Gejrot
Tahu Gejrot is a special snack which came from Cirebon, a small city in West Java. It contained of sliced fried tofu served with the brown traditional liquid sauce which had chilli to (the level of spiciness based on your request). The sauce would make with the traditional ulegan (utility to make chili paste here). Before you wonder what it looked like let me show you how the food seller and his utility.
The Food Stall
The stall was traditional, had the name on it and it also like a chariot so it had wheels too and could be easily moved..
It full of fried tofu, fried chips and inside there is a little place for the seller to make the authentic sauce.
The Authentic Sauce
After you ordered, the seller would rightaway make the sauce for your fried tofu. We only ordered 2 chillies to be put in our sauce, don’t try to use the medium spiciness cause he would put 5 chillies to our sauce (crazy, right?).
After finished blending the sauce, he would pour it to our fried tofu.
The Price
It was 15,000 IDR or just around 1.1 USD for a portion of the fried tofu. How do you think about the price, is it expensive?
The Look and The Taste
Here how the tahu gejrot looked like when we opened it at home
The portion was quite large. The tofu weren’t crunchy anymore cause the seller didn’t separate the sauce even when we said we wanted to take it away. The sauce had sweet spicy flavour. Not the best one we could get, cause we thought the tofu weren’t fresh anymore, maybe because the seller fried it in the morning so it wasn’t that tasty anymore. But I promise you it was so tasty usually and you could buy it anywhere in my country.
Have you tried our gejrot tofu?
