Hello, Friends especially Foodies!
On Monday evening, I needed to accompany mom back to the hospital to take her insulin pens. So, after I had got off from work, we didi first thing first, we went to the hospital (OMG that day was rainy) and after got what mom needed, we decided to have old fashioned meatballs (in Indonesia we called it bakwan), and the restaurant was not too far from the hospital…
Before I start to share our experience there, I would like to explain a bit about this bakwan. As maybe you already known, I grew up in the capital city of East Java, Surabaya. Surabaya had many authentic delicious dish, one called bakwan. Bakwan actually were meatballs which usually also served with some other meatballs which were not had the shape of a ball, it usually served with the fried shewmay, tofu meatballs (not ball at all), and also fried balls or anything. The different between these bakwan with the bakso (commonly met meatballs here) usually because of the companion of them, usually bakso had the noodle in it too, not much and some also had the vegetables like green veggie and or beansprout in it too… These two kind of companions won’t be put in bakwan. That’s the different between them. And in my opinion, the bakwan usually had more beef composition than bakso (bakso contained more flour than bakwan). Enough with the prologue, and now let me share our unforgettable experience.
THE OUTLOOK
We came there at around 7 pm something, and they would close at around 8 pm (a big no, right, I had confirmed to them by calling from the hospital before). The restaurant looked modest and old from the outside, in a ruko (a building in between of house and shop, commonly find here in my country).
THE DINING AREA
They only had a modest old fashioned air conditionered dining area, large enough and also clean and neat. Nice, the chairs were also comfortable and soft.
THE MENU
Here was their menu,
They sold Indonesian Chinese menu with their legendary bakwan (meatballs) as their authentic specialication menu. Don’t be surprised cause the menu was actually their receipt, so old fashion, here you could write your order yourselves, or ask the waiter to write them for you!
THE FOOD & THE OUTLOOK
Our drinks came first
Then only around 5 minutes later, our bowls of bakwan also arrived
Here they had three kinds of sauce, the spiciest one was the orange color one was their chilli paste, the sour one was their authentic red tomato sauce, and also they had the chilli sauce, it had the sour, sweet and also a bit spicy flavour. Both mom and I added the chilli paste and also tomato sauce to our bowls. You should try their authentic tomato sauce here…
Not a long time until the waiter completed our order with two plates of rice. Here was our complete dinner
Both mom and I ordered their mixed bakwan with rice. Look that there, the plates and also bowls they used were also old fashioned.
THE TASTE & THE FLAVOUR
Each bowl of our BAKWAN CAMPUR (Mixed Meatballs) contained a fried tofu meatball, a fried shew may, two kind of meatballs (rough and smooth) plus a fried meatball. The taste of them were:
THE FRIED TOFU MEATBALL
It contained the fried tofu with beef with the tasty savory flavour.
THE FRIED SHEW MAY
Rich in its filling which made from chicken and also shrimp with the thin skin, it was so tasty in savory flavour. I added the tomato and chilli paste here to bring some sour, sweet and also spicy flavour.
THE MEATBALLS
We had the rough and smooth one there, the rough one was tastier and a bit rough inside… They had chewy soft texture. The smooth one was less savory than the rough one. But both of them were great, tasty in savory.
THE FRIED MEATBALL
It also contained the shrimp and chicken, made so delicious in savory flavour. :9 mom was so in love with this…
THE PRICE
It was 92,000 IDR or around 6.4 USD, fair price for that delicious bakwan we had!
You all should come and try the old fashioned meatballs there too!
