The senses are always a good vehicle to transport us in time, and smell is one of them, especially when we perceive that characteristic aroma that takes us directly to the moment where we perceive it, in the initiative, talking with my ancestors @tibaire invites us to talk about those perfumes that make us evoke our ancestors and how we relate to them in our childhood.
The smell of freshly brewed coffee reminds me of my maternal grandmother, every weekend my mother would take us to visit mommy and daddy, that's what we called our grandparents. As soon as we entered their house, we began to perceive the aroma it was giving off. Mama liked to brew it in the middle of the afternoon, the time when we used to arrive, only teenagers and adults were allowed to drink it, so my brothers and I did not get to savor this drink.
Mamaita was not an affectionate woman with her grandchildren, on one occasion one of my cousins asked me what I remembered about her, and what was her teaching, and I could not bring to my memory any significant event to answer those questions, the grandmother spoke only with my mother, she ignored us or at least that was my impression. Physical contact was null, she never had an affectionate word for me that I remember.
My grandmother suffered a stroke, when I was seven years old, after that event, everything changed for her, and her scent also now the perfume of talcum powder, with which I can evoke her, my mother used to put it on after bathing her, she was no longer strong and impenetrable, at that time she was fragile, docile, and sometimes hostile, she did not like to depend on others.
Her life was not easy, from a very early age she had to work in the haciendas as a day laborer, she did not know what it was like to have a doll to play with, and she never learned to read or write. Her first daughter died when she was sixteen years old, she had to divide her children among her sisters because she could not take care of them because she was seriously ill for a whole year, she never had time to regret it, she had to get up and go on.
The house where she lived was burned down, and she lost all her belongings, due to this event my grandfather lost his sanity, she went into the mountains of Chivacoa, leaving her alone with four small children, she had to live with relatives who told her to leave her husband, but she refused to do so until she returned, and they decided to start a new life in the city.
Her strong character was only a mask to cope with all the pain she had suffered, and the shortages she had to endure, perhaps she annulled her dreams, and her desires because she had to raise her five children, and then she had to raise four grandchildren, leaving aside that woman who wanted something more.
Mamaíta gave me just what she could give me, neither more nor less, I learned to love her as she was, I honor her life and her lineage, and I thank her for bringing my mother into the world, who gave me the possibility to exist, however, I release all the legacy that remains for me to have a full life and I choose to keep what adds up.
