Working out is something I’ve found really difficult sticking to. People that workout understand how it is when you just start, and how much motivation you need to keep doing it. That’s the problem most of the time with me. Motivation. I lack motivation most of the time to get my ass out of bed and to the gym.
My mental health is normally my biggest motivation to go work out. Aside staying fit, workout has the added advantage of improving your mental health. Or should I say MY mental health. I just feel better when mentally when I hit the gym. So mostly, the gym is the first sign that my mental health is into oblivion. First thing I do when I’m sliding into depression or anything like that, I hit the gym (And I clean my room too. Which is mostly very messy at this time).
But that is basically about it. Once my mental health improves, I stop going. So I guess you could say my gym routine is “Go when you’re feeling shitty mentally, and stop when you’re better”. Not a very good routine but it’s good enough. Several times I’ve tried to keep going even when my mental health has improved and I’m out of the dark phase, but I just don’t have enough motivation to do it.
There are many things aside lifting heavy weights in the gym or even the aerobics people do in the gym. Your exercise generally should be tailored to the kind of person you are. Me, I’m a skinny fella, so none of that extra stuff for me. I do very basic things.
If you’ve been reading from me, you know I’m a student, so that kinda implies I do a lot of walking. I don’t use a motor cycle or a car, and my hostel is pretty far from my school campus. Far enough to get a decent walk to and from campus everyday.
I’m on my feet everyday 5 days a week to attend lectures on campus. This is enough exercise for the average person. I used to be able to monitor my steps with the STEPS App when I was using my Samsung phone. This way, I could get in some extra walk or maybe a jog during the weekend if I ever noticed I didn’t walk enough during the 5 days of the week.
My stay-fit exercise is honestly nothing heavy, just some very light stuff. Mostly just walking, but running on a few occasions. I used to go for jogs when I was bored a few months back, but talking about this now just reminded me I haven’t done that in almost 6 months. Really need to go for a night jog one of these days!
I’ve also mentioned in a couple of my posts I like swimming. I don’t do it very often, but when I have the time(and money), I go to the pool once a while to stretch myself. It’s a fun activity and at the same time, an exercise.
Damn! Writing this post just showed me how much loose I’ve gotten on exercise. I haven’t been to the pool in a while too. I think I should fix that next week. I’ll go pool side next week after I’ve sorted all the shit I’m dealing with in school. Should be fun. Maybe I’ll even tell you guys about it here.
There really isn’t that much to my exercise, because I’m not that much myself lol. Besides the small weight lifting I do in the gym, walking and swimming, are both no-sweating activities. And the best thing I’m either enjoying what I’m doing(swimming and weight lifting) or don’t even notice I’m doing it(walking to lectures). It’s a win-win eeeh.
I believe the best way to exercise is by doing something you find fun. You’ll never lack motivation if you tailor your stay fit routine this way. And you’ll always be looking for to it, like I’m looking forward to next week now.
