What's it "like" to grow older?

Mrs. Denmarkguy and I live a pretty active life, which is pretty much a given when you're homeowners and wannabe urban homesteaders. There's pretty much always something that needs doing, around here.

Periodically, we look at each other — often at the end of a long day of doing yardwork — and declare "We're just not 29 anymore!"

On the balance, I wouldn't say I have lost a whole lot of strength, or even stamina; what I have lost is the ability to recover and go out and do the same thing again, tomorrow.

I'm feeling it, today. After helping our friends unload their moving truck on Sunday... I'm sitting here on Tuesday night with a sore and achy back, and a painful reluctance to get up while also turning. I can stand up... or I can turn... but not the two together.

Weird, yes I know...

I have also learned that I am not particularly good at concentrating, when my body is sore. I suppose I never really was, but I used to recover from doing something strenuous in a matter of hours, rather than days.

There were lots of things I "intended" to get done today, but it was a struggle to just get my eBay and Etsy orders assembled, packed up and taken to the post office. And that did not involve heavy lifting.

We don't really talk much about the practical aspects of aging, here in "eternally-youthful" USA. When we talk about aging, it's usually in the context of finding ways to make ourselves YOUNGER, rather than practical ways to meet and deal with the world... as we are.

We might not like it, but we're not going to get any younger!

Truth be known, I am not ashamed of aging. I'm also not afraid of it. I think some of that might be the result of growing up in Europe... aging seems less stigmatizing and marginalizing, "over there."

It's not the end of the world.

Well... fair dinkum... it might mean the end of life, eventually, for all of us. But death is a pretty natural conclusion of life.

I mostly just want to stay as healthy as possible... so I can keep working in my yard and enjoy gardening for as long as possible, even if I have to do so at a reduced pace.

And no, I am not "resigned" to getting older. I am simply getting older... and it's a natural thing. I'm neither trying to hurry it along, nor am I trying to avoid it... it simply is what it is!

With that said, I think it is time for me to sit in bed with a good book and continue to rest my back.

Back pain sucks! But this too, shall pass!

Thanks for stopping by, and have a great remainder of your week!
