Unless you've been living under a rock, you're probably as well aware as the next person that the crypto markets as well as the greater economies of many nations are rather sketchy, these days.

Am I personally worried? Well, of COURse I'm worried... but then again, I'm not really that worried.

As I watched both the cryptosphere — as well as a number of traditional financial markets around the world — take another "dump," I got to thinking about conversations I had many years ago with my aunt... about living through difficult times.

My auntie was old enough that she had lived through World War II in German occupied Denmark, where everyone definitely got to experience various forms of hardship, and not all of them just economic.

One of the points she used to make — and this was some 30 years ago, now — was that there was always some opportunity to be found, and you just needed to find the determination to continue "paddling against the current," even when you felt sick and tired of doing so.

Part of her reasoning was that those who kept plugging away at whatever they were doing during times of hardship also became the ones who found themselves in the strongest position when better times returned. As they almost invariably seem to do, because so much of our lives is cyclical.

In her case, she was part of the very earliest "materials reclamation" efforts in Denmark during WWII, where they literally would strip paint from old metal and "regenerate" it as new paint that could be used in industrial applications.

When the war ended and things gradually returned to normal — and solvents and supplies became available again — the factory she oversaw was by far the most efficient in the market and thus had a considerable competitive advantage.

During difficult economic times, it can be tempting to give up... or you can resign yourself to the fact that you may have to work 20% harder to get the same results as before. But the good news is that if you do stay with it, you'll be at an advantage when the tide turns.

In a small way, we even see a variation of that in a community like Hive: As the token price declines, so the activity level seems to decline... and vice versa. For a lot of people, it's just "no fun" to put in the time and watch your efforts return less and less.

Earlier today, our native Hive token briefly dipped below the $1.00 for the first time in a while. It seemed almost shocking, yet it seems like not that long ago we were worried about whether Hive would sink to ten cents.

Thankfully, I just enjoy writing, so I'm going to keep plugging on, regardless. Even so, there are definitely aspects of my other home businesses that feel like "paddling against the current," and have done so for the past couple of years. Hard to believe we are coming up to "celebrating" two years of Covid...

Anyway, having a night of insomnia, so decided to do what I always do now when I can't go to sleep: Stop trying! Instead, I just get back up and go do something... as a result of which I often get tired and end up sleeping well.

Which I think I will go do, now... it's 2:35 in the morning.

Thanks for stopping by, and have a great Friday!
