Planning for post-pandemic life was sometimes hilarious business...
Capt. Ludlow had an errand to run that popped up at an unopportune time; he was supposed to be taking his weekly walk with his six-year-old grandson Grayson at that same time, so, he just took Grayson with him down the road in the car.
Grayson was happy enough about the arrangement and came home smiling.
Capt. Ludlow was in stitches later on for laughing so hard.
“So, I have been scouting for a church to go with the family back to when all this is over,” he said to Mrs. Ludlow, “and so after I went to send my registered mail, I stopped by Arnham Cathedral, because it is not a long drive from here. I was checking out who the pastor is now and all that, and lo and behold, Grayson came out with, 'Ain't nobody in this church saved, Papa -- gottagobye.' And he went right back to the car, rolled up the windows and locked the doors!
“Well, at this point I was confused as all get out, and went back and got in the car and said, 'How do you know that, Grayson? That's a big statement when we can't know people's hearts.”
“'Yes, we can,' Grayson said, and walked me right back up to the door. 'People come through here every week.'
“I'm not following you, Grayson.”
“'Come down here and look up, Papa. Jesus was a carpenter and He would NEVER. This AIN'T IT!”
“Lo and behold, Thalia: Arnham Cathedral is a big wooden church that has some of the most ornately sheathed and decorated load-bearing pillars I have ever seen, and one of them is visible from the lobby. But the sheathing is much newer than the building, and from Grayson's eye view, you can see the wooden beams are crac king because the sheathing does not go all the way to the ground.”
Mrs.Ludlow broke out laughing.
“That's got to be the highlight of the week!” she said. “Grayson is out here checking for obedience to Christ in ways we hadn't even considered!”
“Faith without works is dead,” Capt. Ludlow said. “Indeed in that case, sooner or later in the case of those crumbling pillars – but I called in that building to the relevant authorities.”
