Olía a muerte, a carne podrida, a enfermedad vieja.

The hospital was always dark. The emergency room was always busy. There were so many people in the waiting room that you couldn't even see all of them at once, and there were never any empty chairs. The hospital had a weird smell. You could sense it when you walked through the doors you could smell it on your clothes afterward. When you went into one of the exam rooms to talk with a doctor or nurse practitioner, you felt as if you'd been put under hypnosis, that's the only thing you could sense.

All you wanted to do was go home. That's how bad the hospital smelled. It smelled like death, like rotting flesh, like old sickness. That's what made it such an interesting place for a writer to visit for those who love the macabre. It was full of stories just waiting to be told. It wasn't just the smells, either. There were always so many people coming and going from the hospital that it seemed as if there must have been something sinister going on behind those doors, but nobody ever said anything.

People didn't want to talk about their illnesses, especially not with strangers. They tried to hide the pain they were feeling inside by pretending everything was fine, but there was nothing wrong with saying that you weren't feeling well. If somebody asked you if you needed help, then you should tell them yes. Otherwise, you wouldn't get any help. But that's what people did: They pretended everything was okay, and no one helped them.

So many weird things were happening behind closed doors that people would rather die than admit to needing help. It was also hard to keep track of who was sick. You saw all sorts of different faces in the emergency room, and some of them looked perfectly healthy while others looked as if they'd been hit by a truck. Some of the patients were young, but most of them were older, and they came in every day. In fact, many of the patients were elderly, and there were more and more of them each year. The hospital was full of old people.

And the hospital itself looked even older than the people visiting it. Maybe it was because the hospital was built several decades in the past and there hasn't been a remodeling ever since. It was a modern building in its era but now it looked even more decrepit than the worst patients. Many of the lights were burned out, and some of the windows were broken. A few of the walls were crumbling, and there were holes in the floor. The hospital hadn't been maintained very well over the years, which meant it wasn't doing anybody any good. It might be better off being torn down and rebuilt somewhere else.

But that wasn't likely to happen anytime soon. Most people in town were afraid to speak up against the hospital. For whatever reason, people tended to think that hospitals were sacred institutions, and nobody wanted to rock the boat, although this one seemed to be haunted rather than sacred.

The hospital had been here for a long time. It had served generations of people and that's why the hospital remained unchanged despite the passage of time, despite the changing needs of society, and despite the fact that the hospital wasn't really properly serving anyone anymore.

People feared that speaking out against the hospital would cause a stir, so they kept quiet. No one spoke out. The hospital was here, and it was going to stay that way, so people didn't say anything. Nobody knew how much longer the hospital would be around. Perhaps it was destined to become another piece of history, like the other buildings in town that had been abandoned long ago. Or perhaps the hospital would continue to operate until it finally fell apart, leaving nothing behind except memories, mostly bad ones.

As for me, I don't think this hospital belonged to this reality. I thought it belonged to another realm, something like Silent Hill or similar to that place such as hell itself. I thought the hospital was here by accident and nothing more. But then, I visited another hospital and it was the same, and then another one and it was the same. In the end, I realized that the majority of the hospitals in this city were like this one. Decrepit and even sinister.

They are all probably full of evil nurses and diabolic doctors making Machiavellian plans to take advantage of the poor people who come to this place to solve their health problems. Maybe they even steal the useful organs of dead people to sell them on the black market. It wouldn't surprise me to be honest, given all the corruption that has been rotting this place for so much time. In hospitals like these, being sick and under the care of these doctors and nurses is even scarier than death itself.
