I had a friend who told me things i did not always want to hear. Not cruelly. Not with any visible enjoyment in delivering difficult news. Just honestly, in the straightforward way of someone who respected me enough to not manage my feelings at the expense of the truth.

I did not always appreciate it in the moment. There were times i left conversations with him slightly stung, working through the thing he had said, initially defending myself against it internally before eventually admitting, usually alone and later, that he had been right.

Then i had a larger circle for a period where nobody did that. Plenty of people who agreed readily, validated quickly, reflected back a version of my choices and behaviour that was consistently flattering. And it felt good. Comfortable. Easy.

It was also useless in the most important moments. When i was genuinely heading in a wrong direction or making a decision from a blind spot i could not see myself, the comfortable circle had nothing to offer me except agreement. Which meant i kept going in the wrong direction longer than i needed to, without the friction that might have made me stop and look more carefully.

Real friendship is not the absence of friction. It is friction offered from a place of genuine care and respect, which makes it feel different from criticism. When someone who has consistently shown up for you and treated you with honesty over time tells you something hard, that lands differently than the same words from someone whose motives you are less certain of.

The friends who only ever agree are not actually seeing you. They are seeing a version of you they are comfortable maintaining. That is pleasant company and almost no help when it matters.

Find the people who will tell you the truth. Keep them close. Listen to them even when it stings.

They are the ones actually paying attention.
