After that night, young Wez never sat down at his old piano again, as his days became filled with work at the stable—his responsibilities included cleaning, loading, and repairing—and by nightfall, he was utterly exhausted. Yet the piano remained there, silent and waiting, as the days without playing turned into weeks.
He had to return to the city, and everything was different, since the streets that had once ignored him now seemed to recognize him. People he had never seen before stopped him, asked him questions, congratulated him—photo after photo—but it also became a burden. Because the more they congratulated him, the more aware he became of something he avoided thinking about: he hadn’t played again.
One afternoon, as he was walking home, he passed by a theater. He was alone; the lights were dim, and he almost walked right past it, but curiosity made him stop, and something caught his eye. It was another poster, with red letters that read National Piano Competition. Wez approached, unable to believe what he was seeing, and read every word carefully, as if he didn’t trust his own eyes.
Participants from all over the country; there would be a single opportunity, a stage much bigger than they could imagine, plus an even more demanding and professional jury. His heart began to beat fast, just like that first time, yet doubt still lingered—though not as strongly as before. “I’m not ready.” “You haven’t even played in days.” “What if you can’t do it this time?”
Everything seemed strange, but it was a second chance for this young man, and that was when he remembered the judges’ words: “You didn’t win because you played perfectly. When you doubt yourself, go back to where you started.” He closed his eyes and thought of the stable, his family, the old piano. When he opened them again, the poster was still there.
Wez stepped back in fear, but deep down he knew something that unsettled him even more than the fear: This time it wasn’t about winning; it was about discovering if he could still feel the same way, about the opportunity everyone was talking about. Until, after thinking it over, making excuses, and at the same time seeing himself as a champion—What if I try again?
This young man was taking on a huge responsibility, and he knew that this national competition wasn't like the last one—that's why he was afraid. And for the first time since he won, Wez felt something he hadn't felt on stage before: uncertainty, like a musical note that never quite resolves.
