Wez was surprised to see that little wooden box; besides, the five knocks were still fresh in his mind, but the strange thing was that each one seemed to come from a different place in his memory, as if each were a special moment in his life. This young man was very curious, so he decided to pick it up, but he heard a child’s voice coming from inside the box, murmuring, “How much longer are you going to pretend you don’t know me?” Wez felt afraid, since he recognized the voice from one of his memories, so he immediately asked, “Who are you?” No one said anything; only the lid of the box moved a few millimeters.
The young man couldn’t see anything; he just heard the sound of the rain again—the same rain that was pounding against the window of that room while the little girl cried—and then he heard the sound of the door five times. Wez didn’t understand much, so he closed his eyes, and an image appeared again—but everything was different. Now there was a room with a lamp; the rain was heavier; and a little girl was sitting on the floor, holding something. There was also a guitarist sitting in a chair next to his instrument, arguing with a third man, who was holding a sheet of paper between his fingers. Wez was curious to know what they were talking about.
The girl was completely silent, and after that she held up a key with five marks on the end—the same key that Wez now carried in his bag. But before she could ask any more questions, she heard the boy’s voice, and Wez opened his eyes. At that moment, he wasn’t sure if that memory truly belonged to him or if someone had shown it to him to make him believe it did. At that moment, the girl mentioned two names, but the lid of the box finally opened, and inside was a photograph showing four people in front of an old house: the guitarist, the third man, the girl, and a boy holding a wooden box in his arms.
Wez examined every detail of the photo, where he noticed that the boy was wearing the same clothes he’d seen in the hallway; also, at the top, there was a handwritten date along with a description “The day Wez left, none of us were ever the same again.” Wez didn’t understand, but he heard several sounds again—they were different and turned out to be coming from another door, which was smaller than the previous one, white in color, with a rusty doorknob, and the word “WEZ” written in the center. The young man approached, and a voice from the other side said, “Have you found the photograph yet?” — Wez was startled, but it was someone trying to tell him something, and the voice even added, “I’m someone who tried to save you.” That piqued his curiosity even more, and then several images flashed before his eyes again: an overturned chair, the guitar falling to the floor, the girl screaming, the third man holding a door shut, and small hands covered in blood.
The young man was startled, and the last thing he saw was the guitarist standing beside him, who said, “If you ever come back, don’t trust the man who tells you he saved you.” With that, the memory faded, and Wez realized that not only had he forgotten that night, but someone had given him a different version of what happened—and perhaps the child who had remained trapped in his memory wasn’t the part of him he’d lost, and that might be the only part that still remembered the truth. The voice from the other side spoke again: “Wez, listen to me carefully,” it said. “When they knocked on that door five times, who was the one who opened it?” The young man couldn’t answer, because on the other side stood a blindfolded man, and behind him was a little girl. Moreover, a sixth knock was heard from inside the box—one that had never been part of his memories—and someone said, “Now you can remember who died that night.”
