The 30 days came to an end, and that stage wasnât what Wez had imagined; everything was calm, as if everyone there understood that what was about to happen wasnât just about music, but something deeper.
Wez walked through the hallways feeling a mix of happiness and nerves, thinking about that stage, the stable, and his family. He also watched other pianists warm upâsome with quick, confident movements, others repeating notesâbut at that moment, there was no time to compare himself to them. Wez sat down on one of the benches in the back and closed his eyes, remembering: Start from the mistake.
When he heard his name called, he stood up and walked to the stage; his first reaction was to notice a different pianoâbrighter, more perfect. However, as he sat down, Wez didnât see it as a new and unfamiliar instrument, but rather as another extension of the path he had already traveled. He placed his hands on the keys, took a breath, and paused longer than usual.
There was applause and laughter in the audience, so Wez didnât start until he felt complete silence. The first note wasnât perfect, and unlike in other performances, he didnât try to hide the small mistakes; when a note lingered longer than expected, he held it. When the rhythm seemed to falter, he let it breathe. What had once been mistakes now became part of the process.
Halfway through the piece, everyone was listening intently; it wasnât a brilliant performance, but it had something few could achieve: intention in every sound. Wez wasnât playing to impress; he was recounting exactly what he had experienced during those thirty days. The exhaustion, the frustration, the fear, and also the decision to stayâall captured in that song.
When he finished, he sat there in silence, his hands still resting on the keys, as if they still wanted to keep playing, but he chose not to. The applause came gradually, as if each person needed a moment to process what they had just heard. Wez stood up, thanked the audience, and stepped off the stage, where the old pianist from Risignstarâwho had accompanied him throughout the performanceâwas waiting. âDid you feel it?â he finally asked. Wez nodded.
The results would be announced later, but for the first time, that wasnât what mattered. That night, as he stepped outside, the wind was blowing just as it had on the way to the stable. Wez walked and understood something he hadnât seen before: the competition wasnât the end of the road; it was just another part of the process, and this time, he had no intention of stopping.
