Ever since that performance at school, Charlie had become a prominent figure; all the students talked about him in the hallways, the teachers raved about his talent, and best of all, everyone would come to the music room just to hear him play the banjo. But for this young boy, none of that was enough, as he kept practicing songs he knew while also trying to create new melodies.

Charlie had a unique technique: he would close his eyes while playing, his fingers moving over the strings with ever-increasing precision, allowing him to convey emotion in every note he played. But one afternoon, he made a mistake and became frustrated, as things weren’t going his way. “I can’t do it,” he whispered sadly. However, at that moment, his grandfather approached him and said, “Charlie, music isn’t about being perfect; it’s about enjoying every note”—words that were a great help, and he refocused.

A few weeks later, Charlie began to master faster pieces, and the music grew in intensity; some students even started joining him, as they played the guitar and the violin. The music room went from being quiet to being a livelier place, and during one of those classes, the principal walked in and watched Charlie practice alongside his classmates. When she finished, she said, “We’d like to invite you to represent the school in the regional inter-school music competition.”

Those few words hung in the air, and for a moment Charlie stood completely still, his hands trembling as he felt his heart beating faster. He looked at his teacher, then at his classmates, and in a low voice said, “Me, represent the school?” The answer was yes, and he never imagined they would consider him for something so important.

—¡Vas a ganar!

Everyone in the hall began to clap and cheer—“You can do it, Charlie!” “You’re going to win!” “You’re the best!” As he left the hall, Charlie couldn’t stop smiling—out of happiness, but he was also nervous, since this would be the biggest competition of his life. And as he hugged his grandfather and held the banjo tightly, he realized that it was all just beginning.
