I retired a week before the nations lockdown the first part of 2020. During lockdown, you could not go out except to do essential things, like grocery shopping. we would go to the store about once a month. This reminded me of when I was little, about 4 or 5 years old.
The town I grew up near was never the same after the tornado destroyed all the business buildings except for one. It was turned into the town's general store.
I still have memories of walking into that store in town to buy candy. We lived a little over three miles outside of town. My parents would take my siblings and I there once a month.
The store had a glassed front case with three shelves with bins of all kinds of candies. We kids would stare at the candies in anticipation of savoring their taste in our mouths. We had saved our pennies all month so that we could get some. Our parents let us get whatever we wanted as long as we paid for it.
The bottom shelf had the basic hard candy, one piece was a penny. The middle shelf had suckers and sugar coated candies. These were only a nickel per piece. And then there was the top shelf with Chocolate bars and other various fancy candies. These were very expensive at a dime each. Some months, I had saved enough to get me a chocolate bar which was my favorite.
That memory made me crave a chocolate bar. It just so happened the next week was our monthly lockdown store trip. I was craving a chocolate bar so bad that I went straight to the candy isle, selected a chocolate bar and went to the counter to pay for it. The cashier rang it up and asked for two dollars and eight cents.
Everyone around heard me exclaim: A chocolate bar for two dollars, that price is outrageous!
