Y prosiguió—: El juez me está exigiendo resultados y yo no he podido sino solo seguir huellas y sombras.

EENGLISH VERSION:

I walked into the reception area after hanging up the phone. There was the officer, folder in hand and looking somewhat disheveled—the typical person who goes days without a proper night's sleep. After greeting each other with that subtle nod of lifting the chin, I asked him:
—Officer Guillermo, tell me, why have you brought me here? I thought you were going to handle it yourself, as you told me when we left the judge's chambers.
—Mr. Juan, you raised him for a good part of his life; surely you must know him better than anyone else—he replied in a more submissive tone, almost begging for attention. And he continued: —The judge is demanding results from me, and all I've been able to do is follow footprints and shadows.
I felt a chill in my stomach because I thought I knew why he had called me. In an attempt to make sense of the situation, I told him:
—But, Officer, I already told you that my nephew does not possess a prodigious intelligence; he has always been an average, somewhat withdrawn boy. As I mentioned before, he became even more withdrawn the day he started reading that strange book. I have no new information for you.
While he listened to my argument, he pulled five files with photographs out of his folder, and told me:
—We found five bodies; one of them was one of our own, a great officer who solved many missing children cases. All of them were murdered in a horrific manner.
It was horrifying to see those photographs: people contorted in impossible ways, necks twisted so brutally that you would need to be a very strong man to achieve that. After swallowing hard, I thought that the chill in my stomach was starting to make sense. Then, with great effort, I tried to organize my words. I replied... or rather, asked; I no longer know what to say, I can't coordinate my thoughts:
—Judging by the dates of the deaths, it seems like there’s a pattern, but I’m very curious. Why did he murder such an experienced officer? I can understand the pattern in the deaths, but here it seems he deviated. What does this officer have in particular?
—Officer Jackson—he replied in a way as if he already knew the answer. —Well, sir, that officer, as I told the others, caught many criminals involved in the disappearances of children, but his greatest feat was arresting his own advisor, who was also involved in a terrible crime. And even if you don't see it yet, we already suspect where he is heading now...
Upon hearing all this, I felt my heart sinking. I no longer knew my nephew Ricardo; he wasn't like that, he was always quiet, calm. I will never stop asking myself: what happened? I looked the officer in the eyes after seeing the files, before losing all logic:
—Tell me, Officer Guillermo, where is he heading? Let's go after him right now.
—I don't think that's advisable—he replied.
—There must be something I can do before he keeps doing more crazy things and sinks any deeper—I said in a desperate tone, letting the files drop heavily onto the table.
—Look, you can't go because he is going to the place where the sentence of the last criminal arrested by the murdered officer is about to be carried out... He is heading... He is heading to the execution of the inmate Gustavo.
