I was chatting with the girls in our WhatsApp group, Solteras de Oro (something like "Golden Singles"), which we started in our second year of university and have never really let go of. At some point we remembered this day, and I ended up digging through my gallery until I found the photos. They are from October 31, 2020, at Guanabo Beach, in Havana, Cuba.
To understand that day you have to picture the moment. We were in lockdown, and Havana was coming out of a September of curfew, closed and heavily watched beaches, and fines, with Guanabo being one of the beaches where the most fines had been handed out over those months. By the end of October the beaches had reopened with limited capacity, mandatory face masks (nasobuco, as we call them), distancing, and no crowds allowed, but nobody feels relaxed overnight after a month like that. We went out very little, saw each other even less, and a day at the beach still felt like mischief.
There are five of us in the group, but that day only three went, the ones in the shadow photo. One day we went a little crazy and decided to plan the trip on our own, with a logistics operation that plenty of institutions would envy. I talked to my mom and she said yes, and we all chipped in to buy food close to home so we wouldn't need to buy anything at the beach. My mom's driver dropped us off, went back, and came to pick us up in the afternoon, while we carried the food, the umbrellas and the water to last the whole day.
The first thing we did when we arrived, before even touching the water, was take photos. My friends did a much bigger session than mine, because they love it, and I made myself a mini one. I call them artistic in quotation marks, because the truth is we were three girls posing for the camera and playing at being models, and I will not apologize for that. Out of respect for their privacy I'm only posting photos of myself here, although the three of us appear in the shadow one.
After that came the water, the laughter and the food. There were pizzas, pastelitos, cookies, soda and even flan, and I don't have a single photo of any of it, which says a lot about our priorities that day.
Today is TBT Thursday and I miss them, and I miss days like that one. They are no longer in Cuba, I'm still here, and it has been a while since the five of us were in the same place. That year was full of uncertainty and fear and rules everywhere, and even so we always found a little moment to be happy and pull the smiles out of ourselves, because nobody else was going to hand them to us. I keep the photo of the three long shadows on the sand, which describes us best, each one with her arms up, each one in her own pose, and all of us in the same picture.
