I don’t know how many times, in all my years on Hive, I’ve tried to write this post. What I am sure of is that every single time, the main theme—and potential title—has been: Living in a Tense Calm, Yet Again. This phrase is used among my family and friends every time my country experiences an adverse, catastrophic, or dangerous situation.

I know that calm isn't present everywhere in the country, especially if we’re talking about the current situation in the cities shaken by what happened. But in the places where there wasn't major damage, there is a deafening silence. Many of us have gone out to do whatever we can to help family and friends who have lost their homes, loved ones, food, belongings, and more. Upon returning home, that silence and calm mix with a pain and uncertainty that can even turn into anguish.

The common way we describe this is with the phrase: "the atmosphere feels heavy." It’s a rather grim sensation—one of uncertainty, excessive caution, deep pain, and sometimes tears. It’s a series of emotions that I can't even begin to list fully, but they run through my country from end to end, and we have experienced them so many times over the last 27 years.

When I look back, I realize that this 'Tense Calm' isn't an isolated phenomenon; it is the accumulation of a kind of grief that we haven't had enough time to fully process. To give you an idea of what I’m referring to, I’ll share a list of some events that I remember—events that have forced us, as a country, to go through this sensation again and again.

I’m sure I’ve forgotten something, but these are the events that I remember causing that 'Tense Calm.' Reminiscing and writing them down has been a way to map out our collective memory; it’s like a reminder of where it all comes from, and that this isn't anything new. Mind you, I don't intend to romanticize the tragedy—let alone the exhaustion that accompanies it—but I know that this feeling unites many of us, and recognizing it helps us not feel so alone in the midst of the uncertainty. Today, I’m finally writing about this 'Tense Calm,' perhaps hoping that when someone reads this, they find common ground and let go of some of that weight. At the end of the day, what matters is that we are here. We are still standing, and that, despite everything, is saying a lot.
