Dime ¿a dónde miras tu?
🌬️💨☁️ENGLISH VERSION🌬️💨☁️
As I left work today, I noticed clouds drifting between me and the sun, creating an effect that struck me as interesting.
On one hand, it was a bright afternoon, but without the suffocating sunlight that’s becoming increasingly common this time of year in Cuba. On the other hand, the glare "darkened" the town slightly, at least through my phone’s lens, just enough to catch my attention.
During my 15-minute walk home, I kept glancing up and raising my phone to the sky until I realized I’d accidentally created a whimsical, irregular "stop motion" of the clouds.
Then I noticed the same applied to my town, Cumanayagua, dimmed by the contrast of a judgmental sun and April clouds.
In the image above, a tailless rat lazily nibbles at the sun, sprawled on its back against the town below.
Yet in the next frame, barely steps and minutes later, it morphs into an otter.
The rat or the otter, which one is truly stealing my town’s light?
I don’t believe in symbols or omens, but the ease with which we assign meaning to images still astonishes me. After all, they’re just clouds.
Soon the shapes vanish, but the town’s darkness, threatening to spill over the sky’s brightness, remains. Yet it’s the light that ultimately spills, again and again, even as the cloud plays at metamorphosis.
The town shifts like the clouds, just on a slower scale, equally capable of interpretation, novelty and repetition.
The darkness troubles me, though it’s becoming routine or maybe just normalized. The saying goes, "No evil lasts a hundred years, nor any body that endures it", a double-edged solace, but one that kindles hope about the lack of light, if you catch my meaning.
The cloud dances for us, trembling but not alone. Each must choose whether to witness its performance or walk on. Today, at least, I looked up to watch. How many others did?
You barely saw the town, just fragments of its shadows. My apologies. There’ll be other days, other images. A day will come when even the shadows dance, and then we must turn our gaze to where they move. Tell me, where do you look?
The last photo I took from my rooftop at home. Shapes return, now a baby’s hand reaching to grasp the sun... or to smother it. Sooner or later, we all learn: you can neither hold nor hide the sun. Sooner or later.
