Imagen IA inspirada en la película /// AI image inspired by the movie
🔍 What Is It About?
The ghosts of a past filled with action and betrayal haunt an old retired spy; that could be a fitting definition for this film.
The movie is an overdose of espionage. Its protagonist, a retired agent, fears that his old enemies have returned to settle scores, while his mind keeps replaying faces and threats from yesterday. That's how the plot begins, in a constant back and forth between memory and present, where each character pursues something different; some, priceless jewels; others, revenge against those who betrayed them; and perhaps someone, simply oblivion. All of it wrapped in a parade of glamour, luxury, elegance, turquoise waters, and a sensuality that permeates every frame until the end.

🎥 Why Watch It?
You should watch it for its visual display, as captivating as it is challenging. The camera moves forward and you, as a viewer, are forced to decipher in which time and place each scene occurs. Many films resort to obvious filters (black and white, sepia, fog) to mark the change. This one doesn't. Here, the transition between past and present is revealed through objects, symbols, and even through the skin of the characters. That subtle clue is what allows you to weave together the layers of its visual narrative.
It is, in its own way, a spy film with all the ingredients that turned the genre into a legend: a vibrant soundtrack, lethal gadgets, faceless bosses giving orders, characters overflowing with sensuality, a gripping mystery, and, of course, dreamlike outdoor locations. All of this becomes a feast, almost psychedelic, for the senses.

💡 What Nobody Tells You
When the creators cast Fabio Testi, they weren't just bringing an actor on board, but over four decades of history from European spy films and thrillers, especially the Italian giallo. But Testi isn't alone; he shares the screen with Yannick Renier, who embodies the most glorious and youthful version of his character.
Originally, they considered the title Diamonds Are Not Forever, a direct nod to the iconic Bond film. But the final title plays with the idea that the protagonist, like a diamond, is solid but also refracts deceptive flashes; sometimes reality, sometimes memory, and always wearing away with time.
Visually, the directors confess they were inspired by Op Art: optical illusions, geometric repetitions, vibrant colors, and shapes that seem to deform. Two clear references are Victor Vasarely (a nod to Hungarians reading this) and Jesús Rafael Soto (and another to Venezuelans). The idea is to envelop the viewer in a game of perceptions, and in more than one scene they achieve it brilliantly.
The film was shot on Super 16, a format that gives it that characteristic grain and highlights the turquoise of the French Riviera beaches.
And the definitive detail; absolutely all the sound, from dialogue to the faintest whisper, was created in studio by foley artist Olivier Theys, replicating the feel of dubbed films from the 60s and 70s.
To wrap up, a significant fact: the film competed for the Golden Bear at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival. Not bad for such a personal homage.
🎭 Style
In case it wasn't clear in the previous sections, let's repeat it; we are facing a spy film that boasts of being an unabashed homage to European genre films shot between the 60s and 70s. It has all the ingredients of classic espionage cinema. But it doesn't stop there. This film ventures into psychological thriller territory, sprinkled (if you thought of blood, it's because you've already seen it) with psychedelic flashes, and drinks directly from the sources of Italian giallo (you know, that subgenre of mystery and murder recognized for its stylized violence and its exaggerated mise-en-scène). And to complete the visual feast, the film integrates fragments inspired by fumetti neri, the Italian crime and horror comics from the late 60s and early 70s, unmistakable for their violent crudeness and raw eroticism.
These elements are not mere adornments; they blend with the overall aesthetic and weave the film's own visual narrative.

💬 Opinion
Close your eyes and open them again, and the flashes from that screen still linger…
This film is intense, with a rhythm that never slows down. It fulfills all the commandments of spy cinema: a mission to accomplish, a femme fatale straight out of the manual, and a protagonist who handles all kinds of weaponry with the ease of someone born for it. Everything fits the genre mold. But there's a catch: in certain stretches, the overload of images is so overwhelming that the viewer ends up more lost than the character himself. The viewer understands that the intention is to immerse them in his confusion, and partly it succeeds, but at other moments it feels like those visual bursts are there just because, because they can, without really adding to the story. The viewer is forced to decipher what each object, each symbol, each frame means, and doesn't always find answers.
Even so, one values the audacity of its creators, the gesture of rescuing a genre that is almost no longer made, and the fact that, in the end, the story has a solid and believable foundation.
For all that, and despite its excesses, it's a film that is quite enjoyable to watch.
