🔍 What is it about?
In France occupied by the Third Reich, two parallel stories unite toward the same explosive situation that will resonate very strongly at the end of the film. On one hand, we have a squad of Allied soldiers who unleash a campaign of terror and guerrilla warfare against the Nazi ranks. Now, the other story is that of Shosanna, a young survivor who runs a cinema in Paris, where a propaganda film will premiere that will serve as the perfect alibi to avenge her family. Their destinies are about to collide at an event where every word, gesture, or subtle body movement can be lethal.
All, of course, under the unmistakable signature of Quentin Tarantino. In Inglourious Basterds, the dialogues are tense, long, and biting, some are tinged with dark humor and explode into violence that helps reinforce the plot, all while the director arranges history to his liking for his perfect ending. The result is a provocative, entertaining cocktail of brutal intensity.

🎥 Why watch it?
The true soul of this film lies in its exceptional cast. Christoph Waltz delivers a magnificent performance, stealing every shot he appears in, while Brad Pitt brings that particular humor that acts as the perfect counterpoint to the suffocating tension of the plot. In turn, the secondary characters also shine in their context and in the development of the story; Tarantino manages to make every scene feel like a great charge of fascinating energy without resorting to big action displays or excessive violence (which is present in just the right measure).
Tarantino shines with dialogues perfectly calibrated in time and measure, and helps cinema become a catalyst, a weapon that instrumentalizes the desires of many, and where viewers appreciate that effort.
Of course, the audience must be willing to immerse themselves in his particular universe, the graphic violence, and the extensive but very well-nuanced dialogues in the different situations.
An unmistakable author's stamp that, by its very nature, is not designed for all palates.

💡 What nobody tells you
Much of the film was shot above all in Germany, near Berlin, in locations across various German regions. Although the story unfolds in France, the team built large sets there, including the interiors of the farm and the cinema. The Parisian bistro scene was indeed shot in a real venue, La Renaissance, which Tarantino discovered while watching a Claude Chabrol film. The production had more than 350 people on the crew and about 4,000 extras.
The cinema scene came close to being too realistic. During the filming of the fire, controlled real flames were used on set, but during the take the fire intensified much more than planned. Eli Roth recounted an anecdote in which he and Omar Doom were in danger and that the firefighting team warned that the structure could collapse if they kept filming.
The designer behind the costumes was Anna B. Sheppard; Diane Kruger's brown suit, for example, was made by a tailor in Berlin from her designs. She also made Mélanie Laurent's trousers inspired by work garments, and Julie Dreyfus's striking hat.
The designer explained that she sought to avoid the usual clichés of films set in World War II.
Tarantino wanted Ennio Morricone to compose new music, but production timelines did not fit the composer's schedule. Instead, he incorporated pieces Morricone had already written for other films, along with music from other genres; "Cat People (Putting Out Fire)" by David Bowie even appears.
And a detail of the title: Basterds is deliberately misspelled.
The name evokes an Italian war film from 1978, although Tarantino's story is not an adaptation of that film.

💬 Opinion
Quentin Tarantino in this film seeks to rewrite history. Inglourious Basterds proves it with a cheeky, brutal, and "violently fun" proposal. However, this violence, unlike his other films as director, is dosed with masterful tension.
The script is the one that actually takes the leading role. And for that, Tarantino transforms his memorable and extensive dialogues into authentic verbal back-and-forths. The viewer knows it from the first minute: beneath all that narrative there is always something about to explode, which captivates the viewer awaiting the development, because there is a bomb under the table and the explosion is imminent. That agonizing and electrifying wait is, deep down, the greatest pleasure of the film.
Far from seeking to please everyone, this audiovisual work is endowed with its own personality. It could be labeled excessive, theatrical, or exaggerated, but it is precisely that boundless audacity that makes it an unforgettable piece.
A feast of dark humor, tension between characters, and captivating performances, which confirm why Tarantino's cinema is a universe apart, or "A Band Apart" (a cinephile joke).
