A great night out often includes a curry! This weekend I had the pleasure of tucking into one of my favourite dishes, a chicken balti.
Balti, is a curry dish named after the steel or iron pot in which it is quickly cooked. The balti is served in many Indian restaurants and curry houses throughout the UK. Most balti sauces contain garlic and onions, with spices such as garam masala and turmeric. The history of how and when the balti was created has many theories, but one of them is that the balti was created in Birmingham England in the 1970’s in what is now known as The Balti Triangle.
The area of Ladypool Road, Stoney Lane, and Stratford Road in Birmingham has many balti houses and was given the nickname the Balti Triangle. This quickly spread to include an area to the South of Birmingham know as the Balti Mile. Some of the balti houses were damaged in a freak tornado that ripped through the suburbs of Birmingham, including the Balti Triangle, in 2005.
The balti has grown in popularity across the UK. Many popular supermarkets even stock balti ready meals!
If that hasn't made you hungry, here is a bit more food!
And for the vegetarians...
Anyone fancy a curry?
