In the last few years I've purchased Kindle books that, unfortunately, never darkened an editor's door. In contrast, author Geddes has a real eye for detail and obviously cares about quality.
Usually more of a Science Fiction reader, it's also quite unusual for me to pick up a book like Epiphany. However, this is not your typical dime-store romance novel. Rather, this engaging story about second chances is grounded in real life.
Bethany is from Elora, a small town on the outskirts of Toronto. She has, however, taken a step away from her Mennonite upbringing. Not a rejection of her faith, Bethany's move is motivated by a burning desire to study for a career in veterinary medicine.
With her family's reluctant approval, Bethany has moved to the big city. There, she has become a small-time entrepreneur, struggling to make ends meet by walking dogs.
He manages, quite competently, the well established greeting card business left to him by his father. Unfortunately, his beautiful but superficial wife has left him for his "best friend."
When Griff pours himself into his work, trying to get past the unexpected divorce, he finds that he desperately needs someone to look after Jude, the sweet dog callously left to him by his ex-wife. Poor Jude spends his lonely days in Griff's big, empty mansion.
Near the end of the 19th century, he designed and built the estate on the outskirts of Toronto where Griff now lives. George's spirit is reputed to have never left.
What begins as a simple business arrangement gradually becomes much more. Along the way, we enjoy a traditional Mennonite family Christmas (and "Old Christmas"), meet the kind specter of George Bowden, witness the inception of a beautiful relationship, and watch true love change Griff for the better.
"Epiphany" explores a wide range of ideas and human emotions. It also raises some interesting questions. Can genuine faith begin with a romance? Is there any truth to ghost stories, and if so, what are spirits, really?
Besides being a very enjoyable read, Epiphany has stretched my thinking and opened new avenues for thought. Hence, this recommendation:
