In traditional Western calendars, the 13th of January was considered a quiet threshold day, as it marked the Feast of Saint Hilary of Poitiers.
St. Hilary was an intellectual who is remembered for his clarity, courage, and steady conviction in uncertain times. He is the Patron Saint of children who struggle academically.
In the United Kingdom, his memory lives on in the calendars of education and law as the Hilary Term and is noted as the season in the year when ideas get sharpened and new work gets underway.
The community keeps a Smythson red embossed leather-bound Portobello Diary, which no longer includes the feast day, but does reference Hilary Term in the beginning pages of the diary for Oxford University and for the UK Law Sittings.
For those us not classically educated, we may hear the residual sentiment of St. Hil's Day as the more informal "Make Your Dream Come True Day." So how about we name a dream and may it happen...together? Let's do it!
