Hey everyone!, this year's honey flow started rather slow, this season, should I rather say. We generally start to harvest around August annually. This season our first harvest was only around Novemeber last year, very late with a few drawbacks, but would you believe some amazing benefits too.
We always used to harvest at night. These days we started harvesting about an hour before the sun goes down and it's working very well. The bees seem calm, they don't swarm and attack us as they do when it's dark and the proverbial "insurance policy" when the Sun goes down prevails whether they decide to go a little crazy and on the attack, which luckily hasn't happened our bees are very calm.
Another benefit to harvesting before dusk is the weather isn't as cold so we close them up and they are able to warm their hive before the winter cold of night hits.
As we remove these a few minutes after smoking them, a lovely array of fully capped frames for us to harvest.
The one side of this comb was capped and the other not. We normally only harvest capped honey combs but so late in the season and with much colder weather the honey crystalizes fast, I like to take some more of the runny stuff to keep the honey a little more viscous for longer.
We have around 20 hives on this property at my partners daughter's plot. We recently were lucky enough to catch another 1 swarm which was extremely heavy so we decided to add another super to which we will probably harvest from in the next 6 weeks.
