Israel's Ben Gurion University has created a new and inexpensive device to test for a variety of diseases from your own home. This removal of the need to travel to see a doctor or visit a hospital will benefit billions of people for whom such a journey is too expensive, too distant, or too dangerous in their medical condition or country's political situation.
The $5 kit is comes with a blood sensor in the form similar to a USB stick. The sample data is analyzed using a cell phone, and shared with your doctor. So far, the team have developed tester kits for detecting the symptoms of stroke, and another for diagnosing dengue fever. But the potential is unlimited, and will eventually yield similar kits to cheaply test fluid samples for virtually any disease or infection.
