The Ohio River is the reason for Louisville's very existence but it sometimes attempts to reclaim parts of the city. The Great Flood of 1937 is still remembered here, in some places there are markers showing it highest points., One of the city's most well known parks is Waterfront Park, which stretches along a good bit of the city's riverfront. Waterfront Park is where all these photos were taken, it regularly floods to one degree or another but this was some of the worst I've seen there.

It almost seems like there's some vaguely post-apocalyptic vibe to these, or a least a bit of the surreal. Having a couple guys paddle past in kayaks, going the wrong way up a one way street alongside an interstate ramp didn't help.

There's something about seeing park benches and trash cans surrounded by water that amuses me. So much of the symmetry I see in these shots I only noticed once the park was flooded and the water was there was for contrast. I suspect with all the lovely things the climate is doing this will be more of a regular occurrence but for now playing in the flooded park with my camera is one of my favorite rainy weather pastimes.
