Who doesn't love a nice walk in the rain? Bringing pricey electronics along is just bonus fun. This weekend was the annual Old Louisville extravaganza, the St. James Art Fair. The public schools here always make sure to have fall break line up with the art fair, so it tends to draw a good crowd all three days.
While the art fair is consistently the first weekend in October, the weather for the weekend is anything but consistent. Last year, it was 90F and a bit on the uncomfortable side, other years it barely makes it to 50F and rains the entire time. This year, the weather split the difference and was rather pleasant in the mid 70s with only the first day drawing rain clouds.
Figured everyone else would be out with their cameras for the good weather on Saturday and Sunday, if I wanted something different, that meant wandering in the rain on Friday. The torrential downpours they were threatening us with held off, and the light to moderate rain we did get didn't seem to anger the Nikon gods that haunt my cameras.
Ended up being great, the rain puts everyone in hunkerdown mode and nobody is paying attention to the damn fool running around in the rain with a DSLR. Well, almost nobody, these folks noticed me and asked for a photo. There were less folks out and about than on drier days, but it was still prime street photography, plus the rain gives everything such a different light and vibe. Sadly, my photo of the vendor asleep in her chair came out blurry.
Went back today for some sunlit shots, but those are still waiting for the swallows to help them migrate from my camera. They'll probably turn up when the fall coconut migration is finished. Anybody do much shooting in the rain? Do you do anything to protect your camera besides trusting Nikon and luck?
