I picked up this one ounce silver beauty on eBay recently when searching to buy my very first Libertad. I was fairly stoked since this is my very first Libertad. I believe this to be a Type 2 of this particular year. The type 2 is supposed to have seven dots on the cactus under the left claw of the eagle.
OBVERSE
Then obverse displays the national coat of arms of Mexico, with the "United Mexican States" in the Spanish language. The coat of arms is supposed to be a golden eagle perched upon a prickly pear cactus devouring a rattlesnake. This symbol goes back to the time of the ancient Aztecs to determine where to build their cities. It is still used in much of the cultural, political, and religious symbols to this day.
REVERSE
The reverse displays Winged Victory, also known as the Angel of Independence. Winged Victory commemorates Mexico’s freedom from the Spanish empire. In one hand is a crown laurel to be placed on the victorious revolutionaries. In the other hand is a broken chain link with just three links that are meant to commemorate the three centuries of broken Spanish rule. In the background behind the figure of Winged Victory is what I believe from my research to be the Mexican volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl. The words "1 Ounce Pure Silver M 1983 Mexico .999 Pure" in the Latin language appear surrounding the figure.
It is over 90% silver, weighs 31.1 grams, and has a lettered edge. The lettered edge says "Independence and Liberty" in the Spanish language. It was minted in Casa de Moneda de México, Mexico, Mexico.
