I am a huge fan of Mexican coinage, if you haven’t been following me for any length of time you have seen numerous Mexican coinage.
What I am sharing with you is not technically a coin it is a round. Why? Because there is no denomination on it. In order for it to considered a coin it must have a denomination.
The round is a one ounce proof silver Libertad.
Here is some information on the Libertad from Wikipedia:
The Libertad coins are silver and gold bullion rounds originating from Mexico and minted by La Casa de Moneda de México (Mexican Mint). The Mexican Mint was established in 1535 and is the oldest mint in the Americas. The modern rounds contain 99.9% silver or gold (.999 fineness) and are available in various sizes. Both metal rounds have undergone a design change. In 1989, 3,500 ¼ ounce Libertad platinum rounds were produced. Libertads are devoid of face value, yet are legal tender, still accepted as currency and guaranteed by Banco de México, based on the market value of its gold or silver content.
In addition to the bullion version, a proof and reverse proof versions for both metals are manufactured specifically for collectors. Gold rounds made before 2000 are only 90% pure gold. Proof rounds contain a frosted angel with a polished background. A reverse proof is the opposite and has a polished angel with a frosted background.
Libertad round was first released in 2018 with a limited mintage of 40,000.
The one I’m sharing today is a proof 2016 one ounce silver Libertad. There were only 13,250 of these struck that year. Mine has been graded by NGC as a PF70 Ultra Cameo. I checked both NGC and PCGS registries and there is a combined total of 283 that have been graded a PF70 Ultra Cameo. There have been a combined 746 that have been graded a PF69, which tells you how few there are in a perfect Ultra Cameo condition.
As for the uncirculated version in 2016, there were 1,437,500 minted. Which is actually a very high amount for silver Libertads. The normal mintage is between 600,000-800,000. So the uncirculated version of this year is extremely common for one ounce silver Libertad.
