Today our son and I have made it more of a point to spend time together at the fire pit in our area. I certainly love it!

One of the things that is a little amusing is the complex we live in has hundreds of people in it but literally no one knows about the fire pit or uses it! We have probably used it the most out of seriously anyone since the complex was built years ago lol.
I’ve been trying to get our son into more things outdoors related, he loves it for sure but I just want him to be accustomed to doing this type of stuff so that he is familiar with it and can enjoy it as much as he can. Now that the weather is warming up and I can safely keep him outside with me for longer than 45 minutes or so until he gets cold, we’ve been doing more things that are pretty fun. One of the most fun things for me is to routinely visit the fire pit. I loved the fire pits growing up, it’s nice to just sit there and make the fire, tend to it and keep it going for a while. It’s a soothing sound and look to it.
While we were exploring the area around the fire pit we saw some cool stuff today. There used to be beavers in our area! I think they are long gone, I haven’t seen any around or heard of any stories of them but there’s clear evidence that there were beavers at one point which is remarkable!
Those hungry little things chopped down both trees, above and below this. It was awesome to see the evidence and the little man loved it, he knew exactly what it looked like. I was actually questioning him on there actually being beavers because I didn’t see the first tree being chewed until I took a closer look. I should learn to trust him and what he says sometimes lol he’s usually right!
In our little exploration of the area we found quite a few great pieces of wood to use for the fire pit. The little man set them up in a nice layout for me to use, though we don’t live close enough to it for me to wait and burn all of that in a day. With how often we light it I think that should last about a week which is nice. There’s so much deadfall all around us that we have literal endless supply of twigs and stuff to keep the fire well fed. I figure it’s doing some good to keep lighting the fire because it burns the sticks and stuff down instead of it decaying and taking forever. Fun and completely random thing to think of: wood might be one of the rarest substances in the universe because it’s so specific to make. Diamonds outnumber wood exponentially since it’s just squished carbon and that’s a dime a dozen around the universe. Wood? Special shit! Really threw me for a loop when I read that but it totally makes sense lol. Little free hive for someone who reads this far and noticed this :D.
It was nice to build the fire. The temperature was nice when we were out there but it was getting a little chilly by the end so getting closer to the fire was a good thing. I was glad too, I built the fire entirely from sticks, leaves and dead flowers! I’ve had to use paper a lot in the recent fires because of the snow and snow melt making all the leaves and stuff sopping wet. Not today! Got the little burn structure built nicely, had some dead flowers and two pine cones in the middle of the structure and the surrounding area was filled with small sticks and leaves. Just had to light one corner and poof it all went up lol. One of my favorite things about the fires is the smell of the smoke on my clothes and hair and stuff. Love that smell!
