When i started my gardening journey i watched a lot of youtube clips. I watched youtubers talk about individual plants, PH levels, soils, watering, minerals, bugs, weeds and the list goes on.
At the beginning i always thought the best garden was having no weeds (obvious) and no ground cover. I thought well commercial veggie growers don't cover up the soil that must be the best way. I know that some of them pump the soil full of goodness, or badness depending on what side of the fence you sit on, so i knew also that they wernt the best example to follow because i always wanted a garden as organic as possible. If i pick a cabbage and it has a little critter on it so be it i will wash him off.
Anyway while i was flicking through youtube videos i came across https://www.youtube.com/user/iamnjorganic/featured
and wow did he change my mind about gardening.
MULCHING!
This has been the best thing my wife for our gardens.
The thing was though, mulching you garden can be pricey. having to buy through your local garden centre. Well so we thought....
I think the idea hit us when we were going for one of our hikes. We were looking around and i noticed how everywhere in the forest had leaf litter even the un kept paths. BINGO! We drove home gathered up some rubbish bags and a rake and drove back to the hiking track. We then cleaned up the paths hahaha.
(
So we were scoring free mulch and helping out the local community hiking tracks. WIN WIN.
Leaf litter is amazing for mulch for more information please watch some of the YouTube clips from the link above. He is able to explain a whole lot better than i am about mulch and soil.
Oh and there wasnt a harvest tonight. i just picked some lettuce from the lettuce garden.
Keep on steeming beautiful people.
