Depending on google : The influence is the capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behaviour of someone or something, or the effect itself.
Talking about the influence in steem is mostly related with the steem power you have. But, those who are already having some influence in other social media are also rewarded here in case they bring value to our community.
So, what do you prefer ? The influence in steem or the influence in other social media ?
For me, I am almost a full time steemian and I use what I earn to pay my bills, because what I earn from my main work is not enough for my family. So, I can't always power up to have the influence in steem. It's hard to say that but that's the truth. I'm also not working in any big project and I don't have that much time to be active in the community ! But, at least I'm building 
So, my situation is not allowing me to have influence in steem. It's complicated and I don't want to talk about the troubles I have in life. But, I can build some influence in social media, because all I need there is the activity and the correct marketing !
That's why I will do my best to grow in all other social media instead and to be active here at the same time sharing my progress. That's why I always share any milestone I achieve like : 2 of my tweets about steem are in the top !. So, I'm kind of trending in twitter, but not trending in steem despite all the work I do outside to promote steem. I'm hoping that will come in the future and I will enjoy the seeds of my hard work.
I don't travel to share pictures or cool videos. All I can do is to share the old pictures I took in my life or create a vlog where I can can share my thoughts about things. But, sometimes I don't have that mood to record a video especially when I'm tired.

I mean that if you don't have influecne in steem it doesn't mean that you have to give up on it. You can build your following in other social media and comeback to steem to bring us here value by promoting it to your following you get out there. At the same time you can share your progress like I'm doing and you'll be rewarded for that as well.

The social media are all about the activity and how you care about your standing in all of them. All you have to do, is to choose a few social media to grow in and do your best to improve in them all.
