The flame lapped the oval.

– Is this how you do it?

– I don’t know. That’s how they did it on ‘Crash.’

– And what did they do after that?

Billy shook his head. Jasmine could see him behind her, by looking in the mirror. The coke on the spoon fizzled, turned brown; it was just like the movies.

– Damn it, don’t they shoot this stuff? Like with a needle?

– Oh. You’re right.

They ended up flipping a coin to see who would down the spoonful. Jasmine lost, so she was it. She waited until it cooled, testing it with her finger, one little drop on the pinkie, like a baby’s bottle. It didn’t stay down, she hurled in the trash can by the dresser.

Then their mother came home. They could hear her banging open the screen door, her arms full of groceries.

– Are you even sure that was coke?

– I got it out of Don’s bag. What else would it be?
