No podía evitar desearla.

The secret of La Rue Hautefeuille and the full moon

Jorge was sitting at a table in a small restaurant in Paris. His leg was trembling, revealing the anxiety that was gnawing at his soul.

He picked up his coffee cup and drank the last sip he had been delaying in order not to admit that his beloved did not attend the meeting.

As he finished his espresso and glimpsed in the background the crooked lines drawn by the fine eraser on the white porcelain cup, his heart crumpled and he felt the pain burning in his chest.

He got up leaving on the table some coins that paid for the 3 cups of coffee he drank since the sky was drawing beautiful shades in orange and violet, until now that the full moon was illuminating the dark streets of the city of love.

He stood for a few seconds at the door of the old restaurant, looked both ways killing the last hope of seeing his beloved. He put on his hat and departed, disappearing into the darkness.

As he walked through the wet cobblestone streets of that old town, in his mind a swirl of thoughts tormented him.

Why didn't she come, what made her regret running away with me? His thoughts were a deafening echo.

Annette was a young student in the literature class Jorge taught at the university. It was not very common at that time to see a woman express her thoughts through her writings, nor was it common for her to attend college, but the girl had a free soul and would not take no for an answer.

She was a fighter and loved to debate with her elders, first her parents who had no choice but to accept having a college daughter. Then with her teachers, whom I challenged by showing them that her knowledge was superior to that of her classmates, and finally Jorge, who was dazzled by the poetic lines that the young woman wrote.

He could not help but desire her. Her pale skin and red lips, the elegance with which she wore those lace and armored dresses. The delicate perfume that impregnated all the pages on which she delivered her literary exercises. Jorge fell madly in love.

But he needed to be sure that his student felt the same way about him, so he asked her to stay after class to discuss her last essay. They all went home, tired after an afternoon immersed in the works of the master William Shakespeare.

Only 2 souls were left in that huge classroom. Annette, sure of her feelings and desires, and Jorge, delirious and mad about devouring the woman. It only took one word from Jorge for her to fall into his arms.

The daylight surprised those naked and exhausted bodies that rested among books, lace and papers with loose poems of their students.

They became furtive lovers hiding from the judging eyes of society. It was frowned upon for a professor to pretend to his pupil with a 40-year age difference. A man of letters, but poor. With his teacher's salary he could sadly eat well and pay the rent in an attic that he used as a study and slept on the sofa. While Annette, an aristocrat accustomed to luxury, servants and elegant clothes.

Jorge received Annette's last job and was speechless. His beloved proposed to run away to the French countryside where her family had a farm and there they would begin their own love story.

Blinded by passion, he read a thousand times those verses in which the sweet girl invited him to leave everything behind and start all over again. She invited him to write the blank pages of this beautiful novel.

Anette was very clear in summoning him to the old restaurant in the center of Paris. Jorge went to the place sure that he would not finish his coffee when she would enter the door of the place carrying a suitcase and with that gleam in her eyes that drove him crazy.

But he finished the first cup of coffee and knew something wasn't right. Maybe Annette's parents got wind of the harebrained scheme and objected. But then again, she wouldn't let anyone stand in the way of her decision. She was calculating and planned everything in detail.

After so much thought, he came to a painful conclusion for him, an older, poor, letter-loving man could not make a woman like Annette happy. His absence at the meeting place could only mean that she had repented.

Now he decided to go away. He would leave on the ship sailing to America, leaving behind that dream-stealing idyllic love.

While that huge ship was taking away the broken heart of a master in love, in La Rue Hautefeuille they were picking up the corpse of young Annette, who had been run over by a runaway carriage.
