I really don't know if this is normal, but I find myself doing it quite often, which is rehearsing conversations that haven't even happened yet, or replaying conversations that have already happened in my head.
Sometimes, when a conversation has already passed, my brain suddenly comes up with the perfect response. Like "Oh! This is what I should have said." Or "I should have answered the question this way instead."
And then I start having the conversation all over again in my head, giving myself the answers I wish I had given earlier.
Other times, I rehearse conversations that haven't even happened. I imagine what someone might say, what I would say back, how the conversation would go, and sometimes I even prepare for an argument that may never happen.
I honestly find it funny sometimes because of how absurd it can be.
There was this particular incident with a friend of mine.
I went to the market to purchase something, and she asked me to help her get a few things too. She wasn't sure of the price yet, so she asked me to call her when I got to the store. She would then make a transfer instead of me paying with cash. "Okay" I agreed.
I got to the store, found what she wanted, confirmed the price, and started calling her. No answer. I called again and again
Still nothing.
I kept calling, and somehow, this lady had me standing there for about 20 minutes before she finally called back.
By this point, my brain had already written the entire script. I was angry. I imagined telling her how inconsiderate she was for keeping me standing there. I had already prepared my tone, my words and the entire outburst because I was angry Lolz!!
In my head, I was very ready. Then finally my phone rang. It was her. I answered. And guess what? My hello sounded very calm. soft. Completely normal.
Nothing like the conversation I had rehearsed in my head.
She apologized for keeping me waiting, and somehow, I even laughed with her.
The switch in my countenance was very fast.
A few minutes earlier, my brain had me delivering a powerful speech about how she shouldn't keep people waiting. Then the actual me picked up the phone like nothing had happened.
And that's when I started wondering, why does my brain rehearse all these conversations when my mouth eventually says something completely different?
Sometimes I think my brain is simply trying to prepare me for situations before they happen. Other times, I think it just enjoys creating unnecessary scenarios for my entertainment..
The funniest part is that after spending so much time coming up with the perfect response, when the real moment comes, I don't even use it.
Do you experience this too??
