Train - ride - walk for golden donkey orchids : October 8 2026

Got organised to do the first train - bike - walk thing in 12 months.

Plan is to take train to a place that is safe to ride with good access for orchid walking - picked a track that would offer up donkey orchids and maybe more

Rode down to the Kalkari Discovery Centre - found bearded orchids on the way. Flower is not open but the tape coming out the end tells me it is calochilus paludosus

Growing right on roadside. No orchids in the burned off section off the road edge

Did find one donkey orchid - diuris aurea. Normally there are more but the hazard reduction burn set them back. Turned around to ride back on the non-burned side

Next orchids up will be hyacinth orchids - found a few spikes

This one is not far off flowering - dipodium variegatum

Parked up and walked the Chase Trail - donkey orchid flowering - seen budding last walk

Good cluster further along the track - a fee stages of opening for diuris aurea. Quite a few markings

This one with no marking - pure gold

Flying insect action - really happy with the focus - photo taken in a flash
