White finger orchids and the promise of sun orchids : August 27 2026

Got moving early - get a train to walk a track in Ku-ring Gai Chase NP - looking for white fingers orchids and maybe a sun orchid. It is a bit cool for those to be open

Chose not to do the bicycle thing - a bit sprinkly. Not keen to cycle in the rain. Raindrop mushroom to start

Bearded orchid spike on the way into the NP

Found the target orchid right at the information board - white fingers orchid. Not far off the last known spot

Found one between there and the toll gate - caladenia catenata. Last one seen near the till gate was wiped out by the parking of the toll gate person

Quite a few patersonia iris - suggests to me the sun orchids will be about

Dampiera purpurea with rain drops

Smoke bush

Could declare it a pea flower day - two tone

Large scale with green edging

Always pays to check open areas for orchids. Took one step into a slice under the powerlines - sun orchid - thelymitra ixioides - not warm enough to open

One cluster of slender rice flowers in the gully. Was hoping to find caladenia catenata here - none yet

Another sun orchid budding

This was the real surprise coming out the gully - a leek orchid budding. Not seen this on this track - prasophyllum elatum. Will be back. Shared the location with a friend who lives close by. She will tell me when it opens

Hibbertia - a bit dryer than the others. They go see through when really wet

Did find a few small waxlip orchids under the powerlines. They like the open grassy sections

Last gasp of the mayfly orchids - acianthus caudatus

Caladenia glossodia with a few parts showing - tiny leaf, hairy spike, sandy place to grow

Next in the pea flower parade - this one has a quite different spike - like a succulant

This is a new season showing - a bud - not an orchid - milk maids - umbrellata burchardia. Saw only one. In weeks there will be hundreds

Walked through whole length of a side track. It is always good for sun orchids @ was hoping for more

Also good for wax flowers

They make a grand display of pink and white

Bumped into a walker - a keen conservationist who works for the local council. 30 minutes chat - sure hope she learned orchids

One more waxlip orchid rounds out a side track with not a lot of orchid action

Did cook dinner. My wife found a butter chicken sachet thing. Simple cook. Verdict - not enough butter and too spicy.
