I confess that I was really looking forward to seeing the film based on Juan Rulfo's novel, Pedro P谩ramo, which premiered on Netflix a while ago, but I'm one of those people who needs more context first, so obviously I had to turn to the original novel, right? So there I was, hours and hours trapped in Comala, where magical realism reigns.
De modo que all铆 me ten铆an, horas y horas atrapada en Comala, donde reina el realismo m谩gico.
The story begins when Dolores Preciado (who is gravely ill) asks her son, Juan Preciado, to travel to Comala after her death and find his father, Pedro P谩ramo, intending to claim as his inheritance everything his father failed to provide him during his childhood. But when the young man travels to Comala, he discovers it is a very peculiar town. Not only is it a hot, desert-like place, but it is also inhabited mostly by the dead. However, Juan Rulfo's narrative skill shines through, as the plot alternates between the present, Juan Preciado's story, and Pedro P谩ramo's own memories鈥攁 prosperous past, but also one filled with despotism and cruelty. That town, inhabited only by ghosts and memories, seems to be a death trap from which no one can escape.
In a way, the book reminded me a bit of One Hundred Years of Solitude, obviously, right? It's about a town, magical realism, ghosts, so it makes sense. However, Comala has its own unique charm; it seems to be a kind of purgatory where the characters are trapped by their guilt and memories. Pedro P谩ramo represents the absolute power, despotism, and feudalism of that rural Mexico of yesteryear, where anyone with money had power, and with it, they sought to possess not only the land but also the people who lived on it. But all that power and despotism is diluted by the platonic love he feels for Susana, which is a vestige of humanity amidst that shell of hatred and cruelty.
It is fascinating to read about the ghosts of Comala; they do not generate fear but pity, trapped in their chrysalis of memories and guilt, in an eternal loop, condemned to coexist with the few living who arrive in Comala. But all this is narrated in an excellent way with great skill using the poetic language of the author, who in turn mixes this resource with many popular and typical words from rural Mexico, which in my opinion helps to highlight the essence and idiosyncrasies of Mexico.
The book has no marked chapters and does not present a linear story, but the reading is still comfortable precisely because the author makes us feel like the protagonist Juan Preciado himself when he is arriving in Comala, scrutinizing the town inch by inch like a tourist, trying to find something recognizable, a vestige of someone familiar, and it is the same as with One Hundred Years of Solitude, the story of Comala and Macondo is the same as that of all rural Latin America of yesteryear, with its despotic rulers and its diverse inhabitants, with its eternal memories and its living dead.
I found it a very entertaining read, so I totally recommend the novel. Sending you virtual kisses and hugs
