Bringing life into this world is possibly the greatest responsibility that many of us will have the choice to make.
I'm beginning with this because I stumbled onto a post this morning by taskmaster4450 in which he speaks about the decreasing birth rates across the globe. It's not particularly fresh news by any stretch considering this has been widely known for a while now, but it did get me thinking while I was out for a walk.
Do I want to have kids? Yes, and no.
Alright, it's a fairly loaded question and as a single man, my answer is going to pre-load the metaphorical shotgun and direct it towards my gonads regardless. I'm at the age where the combination of "biological clocks" and "impatience" start getting used more frequently in conversation.
I know that we're pre-programmed with the instinct to fuck and reproduce but that doesn't mean we should just for the sake of it. There are too many idiots running around as it is (myself included).
Decreasing birth rates might provide fewer facepalm opportunities for future generations if the population survives that long.
I've told myself that I'd want to adopt if I decide to become a parent. It's a mixture of not wanting to bring a child into the mess and also because there are far too many kids who don't have a fighting chance within the system. I've not dived deeper into the thinking because I don't plan on making a decision like that any time soon.
I'll not go out there and say that I'd not want to raise a child who has part of my genetic makeup because I reckon that would be incredible. I can't think of another process in life that would be more rewarding and fulfilling to experience.
It's the flipside that troubles me and the thought of the heartache that is possible given the current state of the world.
Maybe I'm just buying into propaganda again and I need to further educate myself on what is really going on. I might be shutting myself off from the greatest responsibility that I don't have the pleasure of having yet.
