How fascinating that first impression of vitamins can be for a child. For some parents, this surely turned into an epic battle, whilst for their children it could even become something very unpleasant from which it was almost impossible to escape. I think we all understood that it was for our general well-being and that we would see the results later on, but these are things that, as children, we simply don’t understand and so we just have to obey. It is only as adults that we understand just how important it was, and we come to feel a kind of gratitude for something that, although it happened a long time ago, was precisely intended to make us feel good.
There are plenty of anecdotes and experiences on this subject, some with a touch of humour and others not so much. In my case, I remember perfectly well that when I was five, my mum used to give me a red vitamin that came in a tiny glass jar, and this is etched clearly in my mind because, unlike the others, this one had a special taste and I really liked it. I’m not exaggerating when I say that my mum had to hide them, as she knew that if I found them lying about, I wouldn’t hesitate to take them. I’m not sure how often that happened, but what I do know is that there were occasions when, strangely enough, you’d see a child happy to be able to take his vitamins.
Then you grow up a bit and think you’ve got off the hook, until you realise that vitamins are also found in the fruit, salads and vegetables your parents so insistently encourage you to eat. Because they are so integral to our diet, they become a constant and decisive factor in our growth, as if we couldn’t live without something that provides us with the key properties found in each vitamin. It would be very easy to ask any artificial intelligence how many types of vitamins have been identified so far, and I have no doubt that there are many that remain unknown and that may have reached us without us even realising it.
When you realise that even the sun’s rays provide vitamins, you notice something special that is worth mentioning – the fact that so many elements work together to benefit, strengthen or enhance something within us. Obviously, not all of them reach us directly like the sun’s rays, but there is nothing to stop us from reaping their benefits. Vitamins seem to operate on the basic principle of always contributing positively. Even so, it is not a question of excessive consumption leading us to lose sight of the fundamental balance of understanding why we are not talking about just one, but thousands of them, each with a specific purpose. Which would be the most important vitamin for life? Is there one that stands out above the rest?
Their importance lies in their sheer variety and the immense benefits they provide, and you don’t need to be an expert to know just how good vitamins are for us. Throughout our lives, we never cease to benefit from them, and their absence can also leave a mark that we would rather simply erase and not allow to affect us too much. Could we ever sustain ourselves in time and space without their existence? I believe that life would then lose one of those special ingredients that makes food even more appetising than it already is.
You could say that we all want to have a ‘vitamin-filled’ life, rather than a deficiency that robs us of the vitality and sparkle of simply being alive. What sort of ‘vitamin’ could we be for the people around us? A question that, when reflected upon, can reveal who we are and also what we are willing to be, from a positive perspective on life.
