Celebration of losers
Hello #freewriters, thank God it's Friday. I welcome you to my blog.
During our performance evaluation last year, we used the 360-degree cycle formula, which allowed each employee to first evaluate themselves before their supervisor and the manager took turns as well.
So, after the first quarter evaluation, some employees were placed on an improvement plan because they did not meet their given key performance indices. While those that performed well were celebrated by their departmental heads and team leaders, those that performed poorly were also celebrating themselves. And they tagged it “celebration of losers’ on their departmental platform. Isn’t that surprising?
When the information got to me, I called their department head and requested to know why he allowed such celebration. He answered that what is good for the goose is also good for the gander. I felt it wasn’t good and further pressed charges against such culture.
Instead of proving him wrong, he opened up, telling me he did it to motivate his team because they were already feeling bad and emotionally bankrupt, seeing their colleagues celebrated while they were placed on an improvement plan. He decided to host a little celebration to motivate them and push them to break the limits of poor performance and sail to victory in the next quarter.
At that juncture, I agreed to allow him to celebrate the losers while wishing them the best in the new quarter.
