Last night, I received this news via text message.
This is massive news for Malaysia.
The total solar facilities we have in Malaysia to date is 368 MWp.
By adding 1,228 MWp of new solar facilities, our solar generation will grow 5X and this step alone would do more than what we have achieved in the past 10 years combined!
This news was made public at a conference held in Kuching, Sarawak two days ago. The contracts were awarded through an auction method and 66 companies got the job. The auction yielded some interesting results as competing bids drove solar prices down quite close to grid parity.
Grid parity is when the cost of solar electricity matches the cost from burning fossil fuels. Thus making solar a financially viable option to switch.
The government also noted they are looking into peer-to-peer energy trading platforms to spur adoption of renewable energy in household neighborhoods.
This is a positive sign.
What does it mean for Malaysia.
I think it is a huge step forward.
Once these new solar facilities go live in 2020, Malaysia would be generating as much as 1/10th of what Germany is doing in terms of solar generation each year. The current leader to model, of course is still China @ 120,000 MWh/year.In the 2017 energy report, Malaysia consumed about 108 million MWh the year before. With the new solar facilities up and running in 2020, I estimate we would generate about 2,000 MWh of solar electricity a year; contributing 0.002% of our energy needs.

...
100% vs 0.002%
We still have a long way to go.
But can lah... Would you join me in my mission? Please leave a comment below.
Hi, my name is Jason aka @buzz.lightyear. I envision a future where renewable energy is our main source of electricity in this lifetime; reducing the largest contributor of carbon emissions by 90% and bringing our global temperatures back to its natural balance.
I believe that this is no easy task but it is achievable with your support.
I am developing an open blockchain that incentivises both producers and consumers of renewable energy and am looking to collaborate with brilliant minds who share this vision so that we can create a future where it just makes sense to go 100% renewable, visit your local store, buy some latest tech and generate energy for your own use and for others.
