There are certain factors that determine the future of a child…
The first on the list is the parents. They are the main guardians assigned to protect and guide a child through life until he is old enough to make life decisions on his own.
A lot of children have their parents to thank for what they have become in life. Every parent actually wants the best for their children, but unfortunately, desiring something is different from working towards achieving it.
Our parents want us to become doctors, pilots, lawyers and other prominent professionals in life. They even work hard to make sure they get the money necessary to make it happen.
But money is not enough.
Sadly, some parents lack the knowledge and connections required to help their children navigate certain paths. If they had the knowledge available today, perhaps more children would have a better chance of making it in life.
Parents are one factor.
The other factor is the child himself.
You can forcefully take a horse to the river, but you can’t force it to drink water. Parents can try their best, but if the child’s mindset is different, all their efforts may eventually be in vain.
We have seen parents with good professions raise children who end up becoming nothing or even a terror to society. At the same time, we have seen children born into nothing become great people in life.
This shows that a child’s desire, mindset and personal effort also play a major role in determining what he eventually becomes.
Sadly, the state of the country’s economy has also forced many children to start thinking for themselves, fending for themselves and taking on responsibilities at a very young age.
Nowadays, we see a 16 year old taking care of himself and sometimes even taking care of his parents.
Weird, right?
But that is the reality in many homes.
Some children have taken on responsibilities far bigger than their age. They are expected to provide, survive and make serious life decisions when they should still be under the guidance and protection of their parents.
And then we wonder why the crime rate is so high.
It is unfair to the child.
I believe one of the solutions is for parents to have only the number of children they can comfortably take care of.
If it is just one child, so be it.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with having one child if that is what you can afford. The important thing is being able to provide the child with the guidance, education, attention and support he needs until he becomes an adult and is capable of making those decisions for himself.
Having children is not just about bringing them into the world.
It is also about preparing them for the world.
And sometimes, giving a child a better future starts with making a better decision before the child is even born.
