Designed in 1972 by Augustin Dupre, the "Lucky Angel" coin is popular among gold buyers interested in "old world" gold or LMU (Latin Monetary Unit) gold.
Obverse
Its iconic design featuring an angel on the obverse is part of its popularity. In older designs, the scroll the angel is writing on is labeled "Constitution."
Here is a professionally taken photo to really showcase the details.
Its popularity also may be due in part to the lore surrounding the coin. Legend has it that during the French Revolution, Augustin was set to be executed by guillotine. A lightning bolt startled the executioner and so his execution was delayed. After this, he was exonerated, to which he gave credit to this very coin being in his pocket when it happened. An alternate version claims he used this coin to bribe the guard and escape imprisonment.
It's also rumored that Napoleon Bonaparte carried one in his pocket and lost it the night before he suffered a devastating defeat at the Battle of Waterloo.(Source)
Reverse
The reverse isn't nearly as exciting as the obverse. It features the French words "Liberty," "Equality," and "Brotherhood" in a ring along the edge, with a wreath in the middle, surrounding the denomination of "20 Francs" with the mintage year.
I went with a stock photo here, because I put a sticker on the air tite for mine, to remind myself of its pure gold weight, so it blocks some of the view of the back.
