There is this group of creators that TikTok has been bringing my way for a while now, and the main focus of their content is to play songs from back in the day. Songs that we all thought were classics. And this time, they’re played with lyrics so people can know what we used to vibe to back then. It’s basically breaking down the songs of our childhood and showing us the rubbish that we used to dance to and play at loud volumes in our living rooms.
They’re called classics, and when you compare them to songs of nowadays, the differences are always so clear! From soft instrumentals to sweet lyrics that can make you swoon. These are songs that are designed to make you fall in love even when you have a heart of stone. Today, our artistes are majorly crude! All over the world, most people sing of money and sex, they’re either glorifying those two things or singing love songs and then go on to promise money and sex! And these things can be said in the dirtiest and crudest ways.
A lot of people say that the songs we listen to today are worse, but when I listen to some old songs, I just can’t help but disagree. While songs of today are explicit, oldies were more subtle, but they were just as barbaric and filthy. For some reason, so many romantic songs of the old days were made from the POV of the singer singing to a minor. Like a 30+ year old man singing sweet love songs about how he’d take off the clothes of a sixteen year old and do things to her, because her parents weren’t home. There’s one particular song that was so popular during its time, and in the music video, the singer was a teacher crushing on his high school student, stalking her about, and basically being a creep.
Of course, not all classics were like these. There are so many that were clean and popular, but the staggering amount of such songs is just insane. Unlike today, where songs glorify money and sex, songs of the old days told stories. And those stories in today’s clime would most likely get the artists canceled. Not because we’re now too sensitive, but because these things are just not right.
But then, I noticed one thing about these songs: many of the artists who sang the cleaner and more respectable kind of songs always ended up having one form of sex scandal or the other. Not all of them, many of them! While the ones who sang about doing really sick things never had a sex scandal. I don’t know if there is a connection here, but I just noticed it.
So, what am I saying? Nothing really. I’m just accepting that songs in the past were just as dirty and profane as they are now. Yeah, they came with cleaner and more vanilla packaging, but since the end goal was the same, then nothing really changed, did it? In the past, we were accepting of a lot of crap, especially from men.
Now, we’re still accepting a lot of crap, but from both men and women. And today, you’re way more likely to get canceled than you could have been in like 1980 or something…
Well, it is what it is.
