UPDATE ON THE HUMAN HEART
(By Vic Buaquen)
Our rudimentary understanding of the heart is that it is the organ that pumps blood throughout the body. There are many other attributions to the heart in the arts, poetry, philosophy, religious beliefs and even in ancient and indigenous belief systems that remain distant and just in the realm of ideas for us.
In 1991 the HeartMath Institute (HMI) started a scientific research on the human heart that has come thus far to establish many keystone findings about the heart and also formulated technologies that are aimed at the improvement of individuals which in turn positively affects the environment and everything around us. HMI is non-profit organization that provides details of their research, findings and resulting technologies at their website.
They found that our established belief that the brain is the controller of all the organs in the body is incorrect. They found that 65% of the neurons in the heart are the same neurons that are in the brain making the heart having an independent brain of its own which they called the heart brain. They found that 90% of the neurological communication that goes on in our bodies are signals fired from the heart and not the brain. This paved the way for a new field of study called neuro cardiology. The heart now therefore is the main guidance system of the body and not the brain.
They found that the heart is also involved in biophysical communication in our body through our blood circulatory system. In this manner, the heart modulates the brain and the other body organs and not the other way around. It was found also that the heart generates 60 times more electricity than the brain and 5,000 times more magnetism than the brain.
They also found that the heart secretes hormones and thus is a part of the endoctrine system of the body. It produces atrial peptides which reduce the release of the stress hormone cortisol. It also produces large amount of oxytocin which is also called the love hormone because it is a correlate to our feeling love in ourselves.
The fourth finding about the heart is its involvement in energetic communication of our
body. It generates the strongest electrical signal within us that enters all our cells which in turn
creates an electromagnetic field that envelops our whole body and extends outward from us.
That field is constantly changing and modulated by our emotions. Here is where it becomes
quite interesting. It is the feelings and emotions in our hearts and not what we think in our
brains that mirrors back to us the reality of our daily life. Those are the main determinants of
what happens to us in the world. We are therefore inescapably and involuntarily contributing or
creating the quality of our personal lives and the collective reality of mankind. Love,
compassion, joy, peace and all the other positive emotions possible to man redound to
improving and helping ourselves and all of humanity. Negative emotions redound to despair,
illness and unwholesome state of our being to include those of everything and everyone around
us. There appears therefore for man to have no other logical option but to remain positive and
ever loving every moment of his life. Is it any wonder now that Christ said that part of the most
important commandment for man, is for man to love his neighbor as he loves himself?
It was also empirically found that the heart gets to know the truth of anything five to ten
seconds ahead of the brain. This strongly implies that intuition is within the functional domain
of the heart. It was also determined that intuition is non-linear and unbounded by space and
time. That for intuition to even be possible we must be in a state of coherence which is the state
where the mind, heart and emotions are aligned and in-synch. Coherence primes us to perform
at our best with whatever we are doing or thinking.
A practical three-step exercise is herein described to attain coherence within oneself and
for anyone who might want to try it out. Get to a space where you could be at ease and not
get disturbed or distracted while you do the exercise. First step is to focus on the heart at the
center of your chest and imagine your body energy converging at that point. Then start a
heart focused breathing where you imagine breathing in and breathing out of your heart with
regular but deeper than your usual rhythm. When at ease with your breathing, proceed
to the third and most important step, which is to start feeling a positive heart related emotion.
This could be the feeling of gratitude for all the blessings you have had, the love and care you
might have for someone special, the magnificence of being a child of God, the feeling
that all is well or whatever might be suitable for you. Stay on the feeling until it gets an
unmistakable impression on your mind or understanding. This exercise could be repeated
as many times as might be needed.
