We still have five weeks left until the US elections take place, revealing whether Donald Trump will be degraded to a lame duck or continue to derail the global economy. In the run-up, everything that can be polished up is being glossed over. So when they say there is no inflation, the markets naturally have to believe it, and woe to anyone who resists.

The latest trick is completely ignoring the inflation caused by artificial intelligence and its massive investments in data centers. They simply leave this immense sector out of the statistics in the hope of driving a recovery, for example in the housing market.

Unfortunately, many Americans can no longer participate in normal life simply because they lack the money and loans are suffocating them. For the first time in a long time, the savings rate has turned negative, meaning people are eating into their reserves instead of building them up.

Much like private reserves, oil reserve stocks are taking a hit because simply not enough is coming in compared to what is being consumed. The huge gap between crude oil prices and refined products keeps widening, and diesel prices are hitting one all-time high after another. These prices have not yet been priced into the economy, and higher prices at the supermarket are still to come.

No matter how nicely people imagine the world to be or how hard they try to cover everything up with makeup, the participants in this entire game don't trust it. Yields are going through the roof, and even an interest rate hike right before the elections cannot be completely ruled out. Junk bonds—the high-risk loans—are also on a record run, serving as a reliable indicator of the economy's true condition. The whole situation is a powder keg, plain and simple, yet none of it is visible in the charts. The Nasdaq continues to celebrate near all-time highs, even though, just like in the S&P 500, the vast majority of stocks are falling.

I can imagine that clearly larger cash handouts than $5,000 will need to be distributed before the elections. Or perhaps people assume that personal AI agents will soon find the best deals, saving everyone a lot of money—at least that seems to be the mindset of tech bros like Mark Zuckerberg. Whether they will ultimately be able to offer any cost-effective products or if humanity will be destroyed afterward, nobody knows for sure yet—but hope dies last, as they say.
